Under the Construction Industry Scheme, contractors must deduct money from a subcontractor’s payments and give it to HMRC, who counts it as advanced payments towards the subcontractor’s tax and National Insurance.
Contractors must register for the scheme; subcontractors don’t have to register, but deductions are taken from their payments at a higher rate if they’re not registered.
As usual, there are personal criteria for registering for the Scheme as well as criteria for how construction work is defined, as well as exceptions for workers in the Construction industry based on type of work and location.
